Urinary incontinence is the involuntary loss of bladder control. The inability to predict or stop urine flow (drops or ounces) is a common disorder experienced by as many as 17 million females of all ages. There are many causes of incontinence (pregnancy, surgery, overweight). A variety of diseases, diabetes among them, can also contribute to compromised bladder control. Although difficult to manage, it can lead to frustration, isolation and depression. Incontinence is not a hopeless condition. Incontinence is not a disease or part of the aging process, but a symptom of an underlying condition or problem, which could be solved with the help of a skilled physical therapy program. We advocate a self-help program of exercises which has been proven effective in helping many patients regain bladder control.
